Some House Corporations require House Director experience, others do not, and qualifications vary. Backgrounds in property management and food service such as catering, event planning, B&B or restaurant management are desirable. Personnel management skills including interviewing, hiring, supervision and payroll are valuable. Basic computer and bookkeeping skills are helpful, and knowledge of food handling/ sanitation laws, and workmen’s comp issues are a plus. Excellent candidates include airline retirees, educators, Peace Corps and social workers, business owners/managers, especially related to food & beverage, entertainment or public relations, individuals with valuable life experiences and parenting skills.

Applicants should be free to relocate, able to provide references, and pass a background check including criminal history and motor vehicle reports. House Directors must live in-house and be able to climb stairs in multi-story homes on a regular basis. The ideal candidate has a college degree or applicable background, and enjoys relating to collegians, alumni, parents, staff and university personnel. Accommodations are provided for a single person. Most houses do not accept smokers, pets or couples, although there are exceptions. Some allow a part-time outside job, others do not.

In many cases violation of any of these restrictions is cause for immediate dismissal.
